On Tokopedia and import shops you'll often find "Kurma Medjool California 1 kg" priced around Rp220,000, or a Natural Delights box near Rp335,000. So what exactly does "California" mean? In short: it marks Medjool grown in the desert south-west of the United States — chiefly Bard Valley, Yuma, and the Coachella Valley. From Morocco to Bard Valley: A Short Lineage

American Medjool traces back to the 1927 rescue — the story we tell in full in our History of Medjool library. In brief: horticulturist Walter Swingle brought eleven Mejhoul offshoots from Morocco; nine were eventually moved to the Coachella Valley, and in 1944 offshoots from those palms were planted in Bard Valley, California. Several original mother trees were reported still standing decades later, each yielding more than 200 pounds of dates a year. From that handful of palms the American Medjool industry grew.

Bard Valley, Yuma, and Coachella: A Micro-Climate

America's Medjool heartland sits where three points meet: Bard Valley in California, Yuma in Arizona, and the edge of the Coachella Valley, with the Colorado River and the Mexican border nearby. The mix of extreme heat, low humidity, and irrigation water creates a near-ideal micro-climate for Medjool. The Growers' Co-op: Bard Valley Medjool Date Growers Association

A hallmark of the California industry is the co-operative model. The Bard Valley Medjool Date Growers Association (BVMDGA) was formed in 1987 when several Bard Valley Medjool growers agreed to standardise practices to stand out from other growers. The co-op gathers a dozen-plus member growers and is reported to supply more than 60% of the Medjool grown in the United States. It has since significantly expanded its certified-organic acreage. In total, the Bard Valley region produces roughly 13,600 tonnes of Medjool a year.

Natural Delights & US Brands in Indonesia

The best-known brand of the BVMDGA co-op is Natural Delights — the same name Indonesian media often cite as a source, and which appears on listicles such as mybest 2026. "Coachella" 5-pound boxes are also frequently imported via services like Ubuy. Realising that "Natural Delights" is essentially the Bard Valley co-op's brand helps you place the product on the correct origin map, rather than treating it as a different kind of date.

Coachella, Bard Valley, and Yuma: What's the Difference?

These three names are often confused. The Coachella Valley in California is the older, more cultivar-diverse hub of American date culture. Bard Valley lies further south near the California–Arizona border and is the base of the Medjool co-op. Yuma sits on the Arizona side, still within the same micro-climate corridor along the Colorado River. When a pack says "California" or "Bard Valley", both point to broadly the same desert region; the difference is more about administrative boundaries and brand than the kind of fruit.

California Medjool is not a different cultivar from Palestinian or Jordanian Medjool — they are all the same clone. The differences lie in packaging, grading, and supply chain:

When assessing a US Medjool box, note: (1) the brand/co-op name (e.g. Natural Delights) as a Bard Valley origin marker; (2) the grade and, if shown, weight per fruit; (3) organic claims if present; and (4) packaging or codes for freshness. Because Medjool is soft and moist, premium boxes usually preserve humidity so the fruit doesn't dry out on the long journey from California to Indonesia.

A Brief History of the California Date Industry

Date growing in the American south-west began in the early twentieth century, when the US government imported date offshoots from the Middle East and North Africa to seed a new industry in the California and Arizona deserts. The Coachella Valley grew into a hub of "date gardens" with its own culture, including the legendary date shake. Medjool itself joined later via the eleven 1927 offshoots and the 1944 Bard Valley planting. So when people say "American dates", it is really a young industry built from transplanted cultivars — Medjool being just one, though now the most iconic.

One appeal of California Medjool is its emphasis on uniform standards. As a co-op, BVMDGA encourages consistent growing practices and has more recently significantly expanded its certified-organic acreage. For some Indonesian buyers, an organic label and origin traceability add value that explains the premium. But remember, "organic" is about growing method, not a marker that the fruit is automatically bigger or sweeter — size and flavour are still set by grade and freshness, not the label alone.
